Seljataha on j\u00e4\u00e4nud sajandipikkune ajalugu, kus seltsilised koos on k\u00e4inud ning oma tegevusega uhkelt sinimustvalget trikoloori k\u00f5rgel hoidnud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Londoni Eesti Selts asutati 1921 aastal Londonis, Eesti Vabariigi Esinduses (Saatkonnas) South Kensingtonis. Saatkonna majas anti Seltsi k\u00e4sutusse suurem tuba, kus korraldati koosviibimisi. Kokku tuldi nii Londonist kui ka kaugemaltki Inglismaalt. Teretulnud olid inglise sadamaid k\u00fclastavad eesti meremehed. <\/span><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">\u00dches 1938 aasta s\u00f5numis kirjutatakse: \u2018\u2019Seltsi ruumides on kodune soe \u00f5hkkond, kus liikmed p\u00fchap\u00e4eviti hulgana raadiot kuulates , raamatukogu ja ajakirju kasutades, seltskondlikke m\u00e4ngude juures mugavalt aega veedavad.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">L\u00e4bi aastate on Londoni Eesti Seltsi tegevuseks olnud suurlinnas elavate eestlaste kokkuviimine ja kaasmaalaste omavahelise l\u00e4bik\u00e4imise organiseerimine rahvuslikus ja s\u00f5bralikus koost\u00f6\u00f6 vaimus. Innustamine Londonis ning selle \u00fcmbruses elevaid eestlasi s\u00e4iltama rahvusliku kultuuri omap\u00e4ra ning tutvustamise seda teistele rahvastele. Selts pakub k\u00fclalislahkust ja kaasmaalastega kohtumise v\u00f5imalusi nii kohalikele kui ka l\u00fchiajaliselt Londonit k\u00fclastavatele eestlastele.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">\u00dclempreester Nigul Hindo, kes oli Seltsi esimees aastatel 1952-1963, on kirjutanud oma ajaloolises raamatus j\u00e4rgneva tsitaadi : \u2018\u2018Mis m\u00f5te on olla \u00fche v\u00f5i teise organisatsiooni liige ja tegelane? Eks see ole umbes seesama, mis on riigi kodanikuks olemisel. \u00dche rahva ja riigi moodustavad need inimesed, kes on selle rahva ning riigi tuksuv s\u00fcda ja aktiivse elu ringvool. Kui inimesed ei v\u00f5taks osa rahva ning riigi \u00fchiskondlikust elust, siis ei oleks ka seda rahvast ja riiki &#8211; elavat hinge.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Nii on p\u00fc\u00fctudki aastak\u00fcmneid hoida Londoni Eesti Seltsi elus seda elavat Eesti hinge ja s\u00fcda, mis tuksub aktiivselt ka kodust kaugemal, eemal olles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Seltsi tegevust l\u00e4bi aastasaja juhtinud esimehed:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Johan Palmer, Eugen Johanson, Erich Sarv, Boris Jakobson, Ernst Johannes Kollist, Elsa M\u00e4ndla, Magnus Kolk, Endel Aruja, Otto P\u00e4rnsalu, Juhan Pruuden, Arnold Ojasoo, Erika P\u00e4rnsalu, Arnold Ojasoo, Helmut Heinastu, Tamara Maripuu, Linda Reinbach,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Katrin Legrain, Artur Sepp, Avo Hiiem\u00e4e, Margit Luuka, Priidu Rebane, Ave Siilak, Evelin Siilak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Londoni Eesti Seltsi auliikmeteks, kes on panustanud eestluse hoidmisele Londonis aastak\u00fcmneid, on: Ida Lemsalu, Adelies Beermann ning sellel aastal meie hulgast lahkunud Aili Eistrat ning Leida Laumets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">T\u00e4na korraldab Londoni Eesti Selts traditsioonilisi kultuuri\u00fcritusi, mis on Londoni eestlastele suuremateks kokkusaamiste kohaks. EV- aastap\u00e4ev, jaanip\u00e4ev ja j\u00f5ulupidu on l\u00e4bi aastate on olnud populaarsemad. \u00dcritustel on osalenud Londonis tegutsevad Eesti artistid, muusikud ning tantsijad. Samuti on Seltsi \u00fcritustel esinenud palju tunud artiste ning loomeinimesi Eestist. The Society has been active throughout the Republic\u2019s establishment years, occupation decades and after the regained independence years, bringing together Estonians living in the United Kingdom, and continuing to uphold Estonian traditions. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Founded in 1921 in the newly formed Republic of Estonia Embassy, South Kensington, London, the embassy allocated a room to the society, which quickly became a meeting hub for all Estonian nationals in the United Kingdom as well as those visiting, such as Estonian sailors. Written in a 1938 log: \u201cThe Society is offering a comfortable and warm space for all members to listen to the radio together, use the library and read magazines, and spend time in each other\u2019s company playing parlour games.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">Throughout the century the Society has been active in bringing together the Estonians living in and around London. Encouraging the preservation and celebration of Estonian traditions and introducing the Estonian cultural quaintness to others. The Society has always offered opportunities to connect and introduce Estonians living in the UK to those briefly visiting or looking to stay for longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">As the Society\u2019s 1952-1963 Chairman, High Priest Nigul Hindo said: \u2018What is the real aim of becoming a member of a society? It is the same as being a citizen. It is to become the beating heart of the nation and to be an active element in its lifecycle. If people stop actively partaking in their active national social life, then there will be no nation.\u201d This has been the main aim of the London Estonian Society throughout the century \u2013 to keep alive the flame of the Estonian soul and heart, to uphold the Estonian traditions even when far from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">London Estonian Society has been led by the following chairmen throughout the last century: Johan Palmer, Eugen Johanson, Erich Sarv, Boris Jakobson, Ernst Johannes Kollist, Elsa M\u00e4ndla, Magnus Kolk, Endel Aruja, Otto P\u00e4rnsalu, Juhan Pruuden, Arnold Ojasoo, Erika P\u00e4rnsalu, Helmut Heinastu, Tamara Maripuu, Linda Reinbach, Katrin Legrain, Artur Sepp, Avo Hiiem\u00e4e, Margit Luuka, Priidu Rebane, Ave Siilak, Evelin Siilak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">The honorary members of the London Estonian Society, who have contributed to the Society\u2019s work for decades are Ida Lemsalu, Adeliis Beermann, Leida Laumets, and Aili Eistrat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #5e5e61;\">London Estonian Society\u2019s main work these days is to organise culturally important traditional Estonian events, which help to bring together all Estonians living in London and elsewhere in the United Kingdom. Some of the most popular events have been Estonian Independence Day, celebrated in February, Midsummer\u2019s Day celebrated in June, and Christmas Party. These events have had of some of the greatest Estonian performers including Olav Ehala, T\u00f5nis M\u00e4gi, Janek Kasar, Ivo Linna, Anti Kammiste, Marju L\u00e4nik, Juri Homenja, Erich Krieger, Boris Lehtlaan, Karl Madis and many others.
